About Us

The Phoenix Gay Flag Football League (PGFFL) started in 2005 when a group of players began gathering for football.  The players created Phoenix's first traveling team, the Phoenix Hellraisers, and competed in the National Gay Super Bowl in San Diego. Three short years later in Gay Bowl VIII the Hellraisers arrived on the national stage, and has since became one of the National Gay Flag Football Leagues (NGFFL) most competitive teams. In the past decade, we have been one of only four member cities to finish in the Elite Eight every year.

After three years of informally gathering to play flag football, the PGFFL launched its inaugural season in the spring of 2008 as an official league.  The first season the Apollos Hitmen defeated the Friends Fury for the first league title. At the end of each spring season the Championship Saturday BBQ has become a community celebration of fun competition for the league members, friends, family and sponsors.

Another milestone for Phoenix Gay Flag Football came in 2010, when the individuals involved in Phoenix Gay Flag Football League hosted Gay Bowl X. Players from all over the country came to Phoenix to play at Reach 11 Sports Complex. F(l)ag Football The Movie, featuring the New York Warriors, Los Angeles Motion and the Phoenix Hellraisers captured the events of the Gay Bowl X. Three short years later Phoenix became the first NGFFL member city to host the Gay Bowl twice.

Currently, the league conducts two structured season per year. The new Friday Nights Lights is a 4-on-4 recreational no contact league held in the fall from September - November. Our Saturday's in the spring hosts a 7-on-7 slightly more competitive league play from January - April.

It is only through the dedication and commitment of many Phoenix LGBT Flag Football members, both past and current, this league strives to create strong spirits of sportsmanship and communities. It is with this spirit that the PGFFL aims to represent the Grand Canyon state with Pride & Excitement.
