Weather: A great spring day in Phoenix, a couple days of rain made the fields unusually soft and the grass very green. A nice sunny day with temps in the high 70s.
Turn-Out: We played at the Madison Park school field and it took awhile for everybody to arrive but we ended up with twelve for the day and played a great game of 6-on-6. We welcomed two new guys - Oliver and Tom - who showed up at the park to play basketball but were easily persuaded to join us playing football.
Special Guest: We had a special guest who watched us play. My sister from Montana was down for the weekend and came out to catch some sun while we caught some balls.
Ball Hawks: The day featured a number of players making spectacular interceptions. Gary recorded the first interception of the day with a very heads-up play to haul the ball in after it deflected off the receiver's hands. Not to be out done Joey made a great pick over the middle a few plays later and returned it to the house for a touchdown. Scott decided he wanted to make the highlight reel too and made a great interception on the goal-line by tipping the ball to himself and some how managing to drag a foot in-bounds. Tom displayed great coverage in one of the few pass attempts downfield and swooped in to make a nice interception. Even Brian got involved with the picks nearly returning one for a TD, getting tackled on the 1-yard line.
Fleet of Foot: Joey (QB of the dark team) and Brian (QB of the white team) each did their best Mike Vick impression by running for TDs. Joey ran one in to record his second touchdown of the game while Brian ran for 2 of his team's 4 touchdowns.
Slow and Steady Still Works Too: Joe (aka Hank) - not doing his best Mike Vick impression - hauled in 2 catches for TDs. On one of Joe's scores, the play was designed to perfection. The white team had just had a successful drive down the field by hitting quick slants in the middle of the field. The white team faked another quick slant and when the linebackers bit hard Joe was left all by himself in the flat for an easy score.
Bruiser of a Day: The game seemed to be filled with people getting knocked to the ground. Oliver made his presence known a couple of times, toppling (yes toppling, not topping) Shawn trying to defend a pass early in the game and then running over Chuck (his own teammate) later in the game. Shawn and Aaron got twisted up a couple of times knocking each other to ground a few times. DJ opened that it wasn't fair for me to be picking on somebody who only weighs 120 pounds but I still maintain he started it! Who knew that a day that didn't feature Arik or Charlie would have so much contact?!
Was Joey Wearing Body Glitter?: Rich, who is often mocked for not paying attention, had a moment of clarity and recorded a sack on Joey late in the game. Joey's sweat must have made him sparkling which is the only way to catch Rich's attention. That or Joey was wearing sequins again! Scott and DJ also recorded sacks for the dark team. Sacking our QBs is no easy feat; both Joey and Brian have the quickness to elude rushers and keep the play alive. These guys did a great job of getting pressure on the QB all day long; now they just need to work on their post-sack celebrations.
Tony Romo Syndrome: The white team failed on all their point-after attempts, which is very odd since most the day each team was the most successful picking up short yardage with not many long balls thrown.
Notable: Chuck, Scott, and DJ all recorded touchdown receptions for the dark team; Oliver played like a tight end using his size to haul in a number of passes that always seemed to pick up a first down; Aaron was a great defender all day taking away shots down the field and made a great defensive play on a 3rd or 4th and long by knocking the ball out of Shawn's hands which would have resulted in a first down; getting even, Shawn made Aaron bite on one of the best stop-and-go routes that resulted in the white team's longest play from scrimmage; Chuck and DJ were a force in the middle for the dark team, as was Joe for the white team, quickly grabbing flags on anything up the middle.
